IN a pre-emptive move to keep the horrendous murder of the late Commander of 1 Brigade, Brigadier General Paul Gunda, who died in a purported car accident last month under lock and key government will next week whisk the deceased family members to China on a two month holiday, TalkZimbabwe can exclusively reveal.
According to our source, this is a plan by the government of Zimbabwe to evade mounting pressure from the media, which is determined to reveal the true story of Gunda's death.
A family member of the late Brigadier General who spoke to TalkZimbabwe last week and whom we cannot reveal their identity for security reasons said the government had offered them a "luxurious" two month holiday package to China to "freshen up" as it, in panic-stricken fashion, moves to cover its tracks on Gunda's brutal murder.
This throws an iron curtain on the media by hiding the former Presidential Guard's boss family in China amid growing fears infuriated members could spill the beans on the fate of their father.
It is alleged that President Robert Mugabe's state security agents murdered Gunda after he was implicated in a palace coup to overthrow the octogenarian leader who has been at the helm of political office since 1980.
Indications are that several retired army chiefs and serving army officers have been secretly executed for their alleged participation in the foiled coup.
Military sources say over 40 Presidential guards are missing and nobody knows were they have been taken to although they fear they are dead by now.
The spectacular coup to unseat Mugabe has sucked in his former close ally and liberation era bodyguard, rural amenities minister Emmerson Mnangagwa, although there is now strong belief in Harare that Mnangagwa's chief nemesis in Zanu PF retired general Solomon Mujuru is the brains behind the coup plot.
"We were offered a holiday trip for two months in China," said the family member. "And we had no choice but to take it up. It has been difficult for us to leave our house without military supervision since our father passed away. I won't say much at this point but can confirm to you that we're all leaving for China next week."
Gunda's death still remains shrouded in mystery.
Our sources claim Gunda was killed by Mugabe's agents and then his dead body shoved into a car, which was then placed on the railway line to make it seem like an accident.
This has since been proven to be false as word spreading within public circles is that state security agents murdered him in cold blood before placing his body in a car on the train track in Marondera to make it appear an accident.
A report from the police, according to our source, was accepted without any questions asked. "They did not even investigate the possibility of a suicide, which would have been befitting as he (Gunda) was facing charges of a coup attempt."
"The government has not released details of the accident and the driver of the train that collided with his car has not been identified. It is also unclear where the accident happened as many stories are coming out of the police investigating team."
"The government buried him at Heroes Acre to cover up their act. I'm not saying that he didn't deserve to be at Heroes Acre, but wouldn't you want to know how your hero died. A post mortem would have dignified his death."
"This is not the first time, we have seen people who died mysteriously buried at the Heroes Acre," said our source.
Sources close to the Gunda family say that the reports in the state-controlled The Herald newspaper were false.
The Herald reported that the Brigadier-General was on his way to Watershed College when the accident occurred. "... he failed to notice a goods train travelling towards Harare at the Watershed road and rail crossing," says The Herald report.
"We are not aware of any reasons why he (Gunda) was going to Watershed. He had no business there on that day. This is a complete cover-up. The government knows exactly what happened. They story is all too convenient."
"The vehicle was hit on its left side by the train and was dragged for 15 metres before it went off the track, resulting in Brig-Gen Gunda being killed instantly," reported The Herald.
"I'm sure the state would like us to think that he died instantly, but a post-morten would have revealed the exact cause of the death."
According to our source, all of Brigadier General Gunda's cars, including an official government vehicle, are still parked at his house in Gunhill. It is, therefore, not clear whose vehicle he was driving at the time of the accident.
TalkZimbabwe contacted the Officer Commanding Crime in Mashonaland East Province Assistant Commissioner Connel Dube, who refused to comment on Brigadier Gunda's death. "As far as we are concerned, the cause of death has been established. You saw the report in The Herald. What else do you want to know?. There is no case here. It was an accidental death. Why are you trying to dig for something that is not there?" said Dube.
Asked why there was no post-mortem carried out, Dube said, "No comment".
Before his death, Gunda had been placed under house arrest and no post-mortem tests were conducted on his body.
